Wishing for Longevity and Happiness – The Takasago Hagoita, a Symbol of Blessings

In Japan, the hagoita (a traditional wooden paddle) is considered an auspicious item because its action of striking a shuttlecock symbolizes repelling evil spirits. This hagoita features the Takasago design, a classic motif representing good fortune.

The Takasago theme depicts an elderly couple with white hair, symbolizing longevity and marital harmony. The elderly man holds a rake, signifying gathering good fortune, while the elderly woman holds a broom, representing sweeping away misfortune. The design also incorporates cranes, turtles, and a sunrise—all traditional symbols of blessings and celebration in Japan.

This beautifully crafted hagoita is a meaningful gift for special occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, or New Year’s celebrations, bringing wishes of long life and happiness.

These artisans settled in Sakurai, where they developed a unique lacquerware tradition blending various regional influences.
