Description

Japan is home to a wealth of wonderful textiles produced by a wide variety of creators.
Fujie Textile offers suggestions for incorporating textile art into living spaces to enrich everyday life.

This time, the artwork "Shining Mountain" is a collaboration between "Tansan Design Room" and "Nishijin Brocade". Modern design and traditional techniques are fused together to create an original piece that emits an exotic sparkle.
Nishijin-ori, a traditional craft handed down in Kyoto, is a way of weaving patterns using beautifully dyed colored threads. It is known as a high-quality silk fabric produced in small quantities in a wide variety of types, with its intricate patterns and vibrant colors created using sophisticated techniques. Among them, the brilliance of Nishijin-ori brocade, which uses gold and foil threads, is exceptional. Since the Heian period, when Pure Land Buddhism spread, it has been used to decorate the interiors of shrines and temples as a gorgeous ornamental item representing "paradise."

The design was created by the Carbonated Design Room, a design unit consisting of designers Tomoaki Mizuno and Wakana Mizuno. The motif of Shining Mountain is Wakana's family home, Tachiki Kannon Tachikiyama An'yoji Temple (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture), the approach to the temple, and the surrounding nature of Tachikiyama. The work is a triptych of spring, summer, and autumn, depicting the seasonal scenery of Tachikiyama in green, purple, and red, respectively. Wakana's family home is a temple, so she has a deep connection with Nishijin textiles. The brilliance of the gold brocade is layered with the "shining sacred tree" that is the legend of Tachiki Kannon. Nishijin textiles and Tachiki Kannon both have a history of 1200 years. The mysterious charm of the work brings a rich scene to the viewer.
The new creation that was born from combining the contemporary expression of the Carbonic Design Room with the traditional techniques of Nishijin weaving - its innovative nature was recognized by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and it was exhibited at the "150 Years of Japonism" exhibition held in 2018.
Fujie Textile has made the Shining Mountain, originally created as a roll of cloth, into textile art in three sizes so that many people can appreciate it. Please enjoy these works, which incorporate inherited techniques and the Japanese spirit, in a variety of spaces, such as your home or office.
