Overview

Experience the enchanting world of Japanese calligraphy through the art of Seimei Kiyosumi (1970–), a distinguished calligrapher who transforms traditional expressions into contemporary art that resonates with modern sensibilities. This piece, titled "Magic," is a giclée print that captures the essence of Kiyosumi's original work, making it accessible while maintaining its profound beauty.

About the Art

The calligraphy features the phrase, "Magic is in the heart of people," spoken by world-renowned Japanese fashion designer and event producer Kansai Yamamoto (1944–2020) in his final years. Written in Japanese, this piece bridges traditional calligraphy and modern artistic expression, making it a versatile addition to any space—whether urban and luxurious, sophisticated and classical, simple and everyday, or even a child's room.

Characteristics of Japanese Calligraphy

Japanese calligraphy, or "shodo," is a unique art form that expresses the universe with only the strokes of a brush. These strokes, though physically two-dimensional, convey a three-dimensional presence through the skill and training of the calligrapher. Each brushstroke reflects a refined simplicity and depth, dictated by the sequence of movements which can never be retraced or corrected, much like a painting.

Japanese calligraphy also incorporates the concept of "mu" (emptiness or void), finding beauty and meaning in the blank spaces around the strokes. A masterful calligraphy piece harmonizes the ink's bold lines with these empty spaces, creating a balanced and captivating artwork.

About Seimei Kiyosumi

Born in 1970, Seimei Kiyosumi has dedicated nearly five decades to the art of calligraphy. He studied at a university and graduate school specializing in calligraphy, and later joined the prestigious University of Tokyo, where he spent 23 years researching ancient Japanese manuscripts, replicating them by hand, and teaching students. Kiyosumi is the sole craftsman in Japan skilled in replicating ancient manuscripts by hand, a practice that has attracted media and scholarly attention worldwide.

His calligraphy has won numerous awards, including the highest prize at a major Japanese calligraphy exhibition in his twenties and a special jury award at the Golden Art Competition in Yokohama in 2023. Kiyosumi is committed to sharing the beauty, culture, tradition, and techniques of Japanese calligraphy with people worldwide.
