Elevate your home decor with the captivating beauty of Japanese calligraphy, reimagined as modern art that resonates with contemporary sensibilities.

Seimei Kiyosumi (born in 1970) is a master calligrapher who has transformed traditional expressions into compelling modern artworks.

His piece titled "Japanese Four Seasons Spring (sakura-colored paper)" captures the essence of Kiyosumi's calligraphic expertise, combining profound beauty with a welcoming, familiar style, presented as a giclée print of exquisite quality.

About the Art

This calligraphy artwork features a form of traditional Japanese poetry known as "tanka"—a short poetic form consisting of a few syllables that express deep emotions and observations about nature and the human heart.

This condensed literary form reflects the unique sensibilities of the Japanese people. The artwork is predominantly written in kana, a syllabary unique to the Japanese language.

The piece, "Japanese Four Seasons Spring (written on sakura-colored paper)," will be released in four different versions, each representing a season. The first release in this series is "Spring" (on sakura-colored paper), a new creation by Seimei Kiyosumi in 2024.

Blending traditional Japanese beauty with contemporary artistic expression, this calligraphy art is versatile, perfectly complementing any setting—be it a modern urban space, a luxurious classic environment, a simple daily setting, or a guest room.

Features of Japanese Calligraphy

Japanese calligraphy, known as "shodo," is a unique art form that expresses the universe using just a single brush. While the brush strokes are physically two-dimensional, the artist’s skill and training convey a three-dimensional presence.

Each stroke reflects a refined simplicity and depth, determined by a series of actions that, much like a painting, can never be redone or corrected.

A key concept in Japanese calligraphy is "mu" or "nothingness," which finds beauty and meaning in the blank spaces around the brushstrokes.

A masterful piece of calligraphy harmonizes the ink lines with these spaces, creating a balanced and captivating artwork.

About Seimei Kiyosumi

Born in 1970, Seimei Kiyosumi has devoted nearly 50 years to the art of calligraphy.

After specializing in calligraphy during his university and graduate studies, he worked at the prestigious University of Tokyo for 23 years, focusing on research of ancient Japanese manuscripts, hand-copying them with meticulous detail, and teaching students.

Kiyosumi is the only craftsman in Japan with expertise in hand-replicating manuscripts dating back to the 13th century, a skill that has garnered the attention of media and scholars worldwide.

As a calligrapher, Kiyosumi has won numerous awards, including the highest prize at Japan’s major calligraphy exhibition in his twenties and the Special Jury Award at the 2023 Golden Art Competition in Yokohama.

He is dedicated to sharing the beauty, culture, tradition, and techniques of Japanese calligraphy with people around the world. Additionally, Kiyosumi is active in charitable activities, such as donating calligraphy works to national hospitals in Japan.
