The area around Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture is a major domestic production center of canvas, along with the Takashima area in Shiga Prefecture.
The mild climate and abundant water sources were ideal for cotton cultivation, and the production of high-quality cotton in the new rice paddies reclaimed from the sea, as well as the refinement of yarn twisting techniques through the Sanada-himo cord and Ogura belt, led to the development of canvas production in this area from the Meiji period onward.
