Yuzen Washi features patterns inspired by Yuzen dyeing, an art form dating back to Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868). In response, artisans developed Yuzen dyeing, which replaced embroidery with intricate, painted designs that mimicked the luxurious appearance of traditional fabrics.

The vibrant and sophisticated patterns of Yuzen dyeing quickly gained popularity among the common people. The term "Yuzen" is said to have been named after Miyazaki Yuzensai, a prominent artist who created many beloved designs.
